My Grandma…… She has always been there. My life growing up with nothing normal by any means. My Grandma and Grandpa took me in when I was around 18 months old. She raised me as her own and tried to make my life as “normal” as possible I believe. You see, my mom left when I was a little over one. She left my dad and I with no explanation. My dad was struggling to say the least and the only option to have some stability was to go with Grandma. I remember growing up I was a little embarrassed to be living with my grandparents, not many kids did. I remember she would skimp and save to allow my to get braces, the clothes I needed and the one thing I remember the most was one Christmas when I got my first pair of Nike sneakers. They were white with a red stripe. I know she saved for those, she worked at a bar across the road from our house. It was the place all the locals hung out in our little town of Vestal Center. I know she saved the little money she had to buy them for me. She always gave up so much so I could have. I appreciate the heart she has for me. When ever I call her to this day she will always say ” Oh Nick, I was just thinking of you and was about to call “. She does not have much these days. She is not able to get around very good anymore. We went up over Easter weekend to see her. It had been a while, too long and I could not believe how little she was. She was this little old women so tickled, as she would say, to see her granddaughter and her 6 great grandkids. She had not seen Kate since she had been born so I wanted to capture some moments with the two of them and then with all the kids. These are some of the images I will treasure, not sure how much longer Grandma will be with us. I was glad we made the drive and I know she was too.
As I think about my life growing up and my life now that is so different from how I grew up, I see how God orchestrated my life to make me who I am today. I have not regrets, thankful actually, for the person God has molded me to be. I strive to be a wife who loves her husband with all of my heart, and a mom who will love her kids not matter what. Those two things I never saw growing up so I am even more determined to be that for God and then for my family. I am so thankful, so thankful to my Heavenly Father who kept watch over me growing up and allowed me to marry my soul mate and to bless us with 6 amazing kids. Thank you Jesus for your love and your blessings, and to My Grandma for taking me in and making the best of what was set before me.
Here is a glimpse of our visit…… I love them all but I am touched by the one where Grandma is touching Luke’s hair, she could not believe how curly it was. It was a tender moment for sure.
